The Rhode Island state Senate has delayed a debate on allowing voters to decide the future of gambling the northeastern state.
Senate President Teresa Paiva-Weed canceled Wednesday's planned Senate session on the matter, but experts expect the debate to be resumed shortly.
Weed's spokesman would not comment on the reasons for the rescheduling. The decision came after Stephen Montalbano, the son of former Senate President Joseph Montalbano, died Tuesday night. So the leaders of the Senate are in mourning.
State Police Captain James Swanberg said the death was a suicide.
The Senate Committee on Constitutional and Regulatory Issues is poised to debate legislation that will put a casino referendum on the ballot during next year's statewide elections. If the referendum is approved by the voters, the slot parlors at Newport Grand and Twin River in Lincoln will become casinos.
