Kansas City gamblers, deflating the myth of the dramatic economic downturn, flowed to area riverboats in January leaving a near record level of money behind.

Casino visits soared sharply in normally sluggish January, up 6.3 percent over the same month a year ago, whilst the market's four casinos collected a combined $62.1 million for their fifth richest month ever.

In neighboring states casino revenues were down a bit, butt the difference appears to be Missouri voters’ repeal last fall of loss limits that had capped gamblers’ purchase of table game chips and slot machine credits at $500 every two hours.
The most recent financial data from the Missouri Gaming Commission suggests after 15 years of legalized gambling , the high rollers finally may be coming out to play.

Since November, 11 of Missouri’s 12 casinos have handled their largest monthly tally of table game wagers since last summer. Seven of the 12 casinos have reported solid growth in total slot machine wagering.
Those “slot handle” numbers are more difficult to interpret, and don’t translate as readily to the impact from big spenders. But a real trend does appear to be in the offing.

Statewide, gaming revenues were up an amazing 10 percent over January 2007, to $145.7 million.
St. Louis area casinos were stronger, up 12.8 percent. The month-over-month uptick in St. Louis was all the more amazing since casino revenues there had soared 7.8 percent in January 2008 when Missouri-side casinos welcomed a wave of tobacco-using gamblers who were fleeing a statewide smoking ban that took effect that month.
