Two Texas legislators filed a proposal this will that will allow Texas voters to decide to allow casino gambling in Galveston and other parts of the state.
Some experts have suggested allowing casino gambling in Galveston is a way to revitalize the island city in the wake of the destruction of Hurricane Ike.
Democratic Reps. Carol Alvarado and Craig Eiland are eyeing a proposed state constitutional amendment that would enable casino gambling on barrier islands adjacent to Gulf Coast counties, which would include Galveston, and in large cities with populations over 675,000, including Houston.
The measure also allows gambling on American Indian lands in Texas and at existing racetracks.
The proposal would have voters go to the polls in November to decide on the constitutional amendment. The measure calls for the governor to convene the Legislature in a special session by June 2010 to pass more legislation to ratify the legalized gambling.
